The Air Force Letter That Turned the Piri Reis Map Into a Lost-Civilization Myth

In July 1960, a U.S. Air Force officer named Harold Z. Ohlmeyer wrote a letter to a college professor in New Hampshire about the professor's Piri Reis Map.

The following year, a follow-up report from the same cartographic unit quoted Ohlmeyer as having found that the map's southern coastline "appears to be truly represented" against seismic readings taken in Antarctica a decade earlier.

That quoted line is the entire foundation of a theory that has now run for sixty years: that a sixteenth-century Ottoman admiral somehow mapped Antarctica's coast without its ice, three centuries before anyone officially set foot on the continent.

What the Professor Was Chasing

The professor was Charles Hapgood, and by 1960 he had already convinced himself that the Piri Reis Map — a fragment of gazelle-skin parchment held in Istanbul and now listed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register — showed the Queen Maud Land coast free of ice.

He published the full case in 1966, in a book called Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings.

The claim required Antarctica to have been ice-free within human memory.Geologists don't allow for that.

The continent's ice sheet formed roughly 34 million years ago, during the transition from the Eocene to the Oligocene epoch, and by scientific consensus it has not been bare rock since.

No human civilization existed to chart a coastline that vanished under ice tens of millions of years before humans did.

So Hapgood needed outside validation, and he went looking for it at the source most likely to be believed: military cartographers.

Reading the Letters Again

Ohlmeyer's original 1960 letter and the 1961 report that quotes it have been reproduced for decades as proof that the U.S. military verified Hapgood's theory. Read closely, they don't do that.

They are correspondence and an internal squadron write-up — not a study submitted for review, and not a position adopted by the Air Force as an institution.

The quoted line comes secondhand, filtered through a report written by other officers a year after Ohlmeyer's letter, not from an archived original in Ohlmeyer's own words.

And the comparison behind it was thin by design: it rested on a single seismic profile from the Norwegian-British-Swedish expedition of 1949, one line run across a coastline that stretches for hundreds of kilometers.

A later review of the claim pointed out what the letters never addressed — there was no second line, no independent survey, nothing to confirm the match held anywhere off that one narrow track.

The map itself argues against Hapgood more directly than any modern critic has to.

In his own marginal notes, Piri Reis wrote that the information for the southern section of his chart came from European sources — not from anyone who had sailed there.

The Piri Reis Map Behind the Letters

Piri Reis was an Ottoman admiral, navigator, and cartographer, born around 1465 in Gallipoli.

In 1513 he drew a world map on a single sheet of gazelle skin, compiling it from roughly twenty earlier charts he named himself: a lost map by Christopher Columbus, an Arab map of India,

Portuguese nautical surveys. He gave it to Sultan Selim I in 1517, and it then dropped out of the historical record entirely — not rediscovered until 1929, when a cataloguing project at Istanbul's Topkapı Palace turned up a neglected bundle of maps that included it.

Only about a third of the original sheet survives.

None of that is contested. What's contested is a curved line in the surviving fragment's lower-left corner — the piece Hapgood decided was Antarctica.

Why Cartographers Don't Buy It

Historians of cartography have offered two explanations that require none of Hapgood's assumptions.

Gregory McIntosh's detailed study of the map — the most exhaustive cartometric analysis it has received, drawing on his research at the University of Lisbon and published work in journals like Imago Mundi and Terrae Incognitae — lays out the first, backed by criticism from geologist Steven Dutch: the disputed coastline is a distorted stretch of South America's own eastern coast, specifically Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, rotated and bent to fit what remained of the parchment.

McIntosh's rigor cuts against fringe and orthodox readings alike.

His analysis also corrected a longstanding error by Paul Kahle, the scholar who first identified the map in 1931: where Kahle concluded the map incorporated Columbus's Third Voyage of 1498, McIntosh's closer study of the coastlines traced it instead to the Second Voyage of 1493–96.

If the leading academic study of this map is precise enough to revise the field's own founding scholar on a two-year discrepancy, it is not the work of someone inclined to wave away an inconvenient detail.

The second explanation doesn't even require a mapping error.

Renaissance cartographers routinely drew a landmass called Terra Australis at the bottom of their world maps, not because anyone had seen it, but because contemporary theory held that a southern continent had to exist to balance the land in the northern hemisphere.

Piri Reis had good reason to include one. So did most of his contemporaries.

A separate detail in the map's own marginal notes points the same direction.

Piri Reis credited part of his source material to the era of "Ptolemy" — and McIntosh identified the likely mix-up: medieval Arab writers frequently confused Claudius Ptolemy, the second-century Alexandrian geographer, with Ptolemy I, one of Alexander the Great's generals four centuries earlier.

Piri Reis appears to have inherited that same confusion, which is why some later readers assumed his sources reached back to the ancient Library of Alexandria itself.

The error is real. It just belongs to the sixteenth century, not the fourth century BCE.

One contemporary of Piri Reis makes the Terra Australis point better than argument alone can.

Around 1531, French mathematician Oronce Fine drew a heart-shaped world map that Hapgood later presented as a second piece of evidence, after finding it in the Library of Congress in 1960.

To make Fine's southern landmass line up with the real Antarctic coastline required rotating it twenty degrees, shifting the pole seven and a half degrees — about 1,600 kilometers — and changing its scale by 230 percent.

A shape can be made to resemble almost anything, given that much room to move it.

The Twist Underneath the Ice

Antarctic research did eventually turn up something that sounds, on first hearing, like it supports a version of Hapgood's instinct — an ancient catastrophe buried under the ice.

It isn't the one he was looking for.

In 2006, a team led by Ralph von Frese at Ohio State University used gravity data from NASA's GRACE satellites to identify an anomaly in Wilkes Land, East Antarctica: a structure roughly 500 kilometers wide, sitting about 1.5 kilometers below the surface.

If it's an impact crater, its estimated age is 250 to 300 million years, which would put it near the Permian-Triassic extinction — one of the largest die-offs in the planet's history, caused by an asteroid perhaps 50 kilometers across, several times the size of the one blamed for killing the dinosaurs 66 million years later.

A 2018 study in Earth, Planets and Space still treats the impact explanation as one option among several, alongside a volcanic structure or a long-buried sedimentary basin.

But on any of those readings, the timeline rules out Hapgood by a margin of hundreds of millions of years — nowhere close to the nine-to-thirteen-thousand-year window his theory needs.

A further leap sometimes attached to this story, tying the crater to giants or lost megaliths, has no documented source behind it at all.

Ohlmeyer's line is still online, still screenshotted, still cited as if the 1961 squadron report that quoted it — signed by Captain Lorenzo W. Burroughs, chief of the unit's Cartographic Section — settled a question that geology had already closed.

The admiral's own note on the parchment says otherwise: the coastline came from European charts, copied down like the twenty others he had in front of him that year.
